NutTrends newsletter story about hazelnuts Dark Chocolate May Help with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

A new pilot study from Hull York Medical School found that dark chocolate with high cacao content (and no milk) was effective in alleviating symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Researchers believe polpyphenols in the chocolate boosted levels of serotonin, a brain chemical involved in the regulation of mood, sleep and appetite.

Ten patients participated in the five-month CFS study. For the first two months, five patients received 45 grams per day of high cocoa content dark chocolate (equal to about one Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bar) while the other five received 45 grams per day of milk chocolate, dyed to look the same. Participants then went one month without chocolate. Finally, during the last two months of the study, participants received 45 grams per day of the opposite chocolate than what they were given during the first two months

Those consuming the high cocoa content dark chocolate experienced a significant alleviation of their symptoms. Two of the patients, who had been unable to work for six months, found they were able to return to work.

CFS is a complex and very debilitating disorder, according to AHA. Patients experience profound fatigue that does not improve with rest. Physical or mental activity increases patient discomfort.

The findings from this study and other research exploring the potential health benefits of dark chocolate have not gone unnoticed by consumers. Mintel reports that the positive health messages about premium (especially dark) chocolate are a key driver in the huge growth of the premium chocolate market during the past five years. 1

Similarly, the nutrition of nuts is also well known, with sixty-nine percent of consumers aware of the health benefits from eating nuts.2 New products that emphasize the functionality of dark chocolate and nuts can help manufacturers meet an increasing demand for functional foods.
