Competition Growing for Healthy and Natural Snacks

Hazelnut Products on the RiseThe high level of media attention focused on the obesity epidemic in the U.S., healthy eating trends and consumers’ concern for the environment are not going unnoticed by food companies. According to the 2008 Mintel Healthy Snacking Report, healthy and natural snacks have become a key development focus for manufacturers.

The research shows consumers want foods that are healthy, flavorful and made with natural ingredients – all at the same time. Snack foods with nuts fit the criteria and could prove to be a popular option.

Naturally Nutrient-Rich Nuts
Nuts were reported to have the strongest alignment between health and snacking in the minds of consumers, according to the report. Hazelnuts are the perfect addition for creating bold heart-healthy snack foods. They have one of the lowest levels of saturated and polyunsaturated fats and one of the highest levels of heart-healthy mono-unsaturated fats, compared to other nuts. Hazelnuts also are an excellent source of vitamin E.

Healthify Your Bottom Line
Now that consumers know nuts are the smart natural choice, flavor innovation and product expansion is the next step.

  • Ramp up the functional value of nuts like hazelnuts. Create energy-enhancing or heart-healthy mixes to drive up the segment’s association as a healthy snack.
  • Make snack nuts healthier by reducing or eliminating salt and adding flavor through roasting techniques.
  • Value exists in explicitly branding products under a health-oriented name.
  • Promote snack nut mixes in a more healthful light—like calorie-controlled packaging or by endorsing all natural ingredients.
